Obituary for Charles H. "Chuck" Chain

Charles H. "Chuck"  Chain
Charles H. "Chuck" Chain, 76, of Gilbert passed away on Sunday, May 15 in his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was the husband of Karen "Kay" (Kreger) Chain. They had observed their 51st wedding anniversary in October.

Born in Chester, PA he was a son of Agnes (Dotter) Shafer of Palmerton.

Chuck attended elementary school and part of junior high in the Jim Thorpe School System and then graduated from Polk High School in Kresgeville in 1957.

Chuck was the postmaster at the Gilbert Post Office for thirty years before retiring in 1999. Prior to that he had worked at R & R Toy Factory in Pen Argyl, # 1 Construction Co. in White Haven, Lehigh Structural Steel in Allentown and for Penn DOT.

He was an active member of Salem United Church of Christ in Gilbert, serving on the church council, the building and grounds committee, the church's pre-school board of directors, singing on the senior choir and working the grill at the church's West End Fair stand for many years. He also volunteered at the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network for many years.

He was a member of the Army National Guard of PA and the Western Pocono Jaycees. He was a volunteer biddy basketball coach at Pleasant Valley and also a volunteer driver with the West End Ambulance for many years.

An avid golfer, Chuck was a member and long time President of the Indian Mountain Twilight Golf League. He also bowled in several leagues but his real enjoyment in life was spending time with his four grandsons.

In addition to his wife and mother, Chuck is survived by a daughter, Robin McCloud and her husband Michael of Whitehall; four grandsons, Connor, Ean and Michael McCloud and Ryan Chain; a brother Lamont Raub of Palmerton and three sisters, Nancy Kresge of Gilbert, Linda Banning of Andreas and Laura Bartholomew of Kresgeville. He was preceded in death by a son Mark Chain.

Memorial services will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday, May 20 from Salem United Church of Christ with Rev. Kathryn Foster & Rev. Brian Nichols officiating. A visitation will be held on Friday from 9:30 AM until the time of the service. Interment will be in Gilbert Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Salem UCC, 117 Corner Road, Gilbert, PA 18331 or to Compassionate Care Hospice, 237 E. Brown St., East Stroudsburg, PA 18301.
