Joseph O. Drakes, 97, of Effort, died Monday, Oct 10 in Brookmont Health Care Center, Effort.


He was the husband of the late Mary Dorothee (Pierre) Drakes.

Born in Barbados, he was the son of the late Abraham and Louisa (Henry) Drakes.

Joseph was a self-employed painter for most of his life.

He is survived by five sons, Ivan Drakes of New York, Benjamin Drakes of St. Lucia, David Drakes of Florida, Arthur Drakes of New York, Maxwell Drakes of New York; three daughters, Miriam Drakes-Shields, Jean Drakes, and Juliana Drakes, all from New York. He was preceded in death by a son, Davidson Drakes, sister Elmina Henry, and brother James Henry.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 3:00 PM from the Linden Seventh Day Adventist Church, 228-20 137th Ave, Springfield Gardens, NY 11413. A viewing will be held in the church from 2:00 PM until the time of the service. Burial will be on Monday, Oct. 24 in Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg.
