C. Allen Conklin of Effort, PA, known as Gump to family and friends, died on March 30, 2022 at the age of 89. He was born on June 9, 1932 in Ridgewood, New Jersey to Matthew and Mary (Heiney) Conklin. He was the sixth born of their eight children. He was a graduate of Chestnuthill High School in 1951 where he was an outstanding athlete in basketball and baseball. On June 14, 1951 he married Phyllis (Gould) Conklin. Together they raised seven children, five daughters followed by two sons.

Allen was the president and founder of Effort Woodcraft, Inc. in Effort , PA which he operated with his wife Phyllis . He was a member of Masonic Lodge 325 in Bartonsville; member of North American Shriners; life member of Knights Templar Eye Foundation; founder, former president and vice president of West End Wings Remote-control Airplane Club; member of Effort Methodist Church where he served on the administrative board as well as various committees. He served as the Sewage Enforcement Officer for Chestnuthill Township; member of the Pleasant Valley School Board in Brodheadsville; chairman of the Chestnuthill Township Planning Commission; and was inducted into the Tall Cedars in Bethlehem along with Richie Ashburn of his beloved Philadelphia Phillies.

Allen loved sports and was an avid Eagles and Phillies fan. He played on the West End and Saylorsburg Lakers adult baseball teams of the Pocono Mountain League for 12 years. He also served as a coach and umpire for the West End Little League. In 2010 he was inducted into the Pleasant Valley Hall of Fame.

Allen loved to golf and fish and he was an avid hunter of turkey and deer.

After retiring he and his wife, Phyllis, enjoyed spending winters in Florida and traveling to various other locations, including Alaska, with their motor home. Allen spent a lot of his time supporting his children and grandchildren by lovingly attending their various sports and music activities, pageants, graduations and weddings. Allen enjoyed hosting family gatherings on all the major holidays. Christmas was his favorite. Family was very important to Allen and he will be greatly missed.

Allen is survived by his wife of 70 years , the former Phyllis Gould. He is also survived by his seven children: Marie Young (Alan) of Berwyn; Charlene Taylor (Jim) of Effort; Susan Yetter (Glenn) of Saylorsburg; Denise Murphy (Al) of Allentown; Jane Dolan (Don) of Daphne, AL; Charles II (Marilou) of Effort; and Tom (Karen) of Effort. He was “Pa” to his sixteen grandchildren: Megan Young, Joseph Young, Jackie Taylor, Phillip Yetter, Anndrea Yetter, Jill Yetter, Alex Murphy, Jessica Dolan Morisani, Drew Dolan, Chad Dolan, Luke Dolan, Kate Conklin, C. Allen Conklin III, Patrick Conklin, Ben Conklin, Nate Conklin, and eleven great grandchildren with one more due in September.

His one surviving sibling is: Hazel Donchez of Pen Argyl.

Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Matthew and Mary Conklin of Saylorsburg and six siblings: Matthew Conklin, Jr. of Saylorsburg, Mary Evans of Slatedale, Gladys Padgett of Pen Argyl, Florence Frantz of Brodheadsville, David Conklin of Brodheadsville and Donald Conklin of Brodheadsville.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 6 from the Effort United Methodist Church with Rev. Robin Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Effort. A viewing will be held on Wednesday from 9:30 AM until the time of the service in the church.
