Obituary for Dennis A. Smale
Dennis Alan Smale, 74, of Jonas, PA, peacefully passed into Glory, surrounded by his family, on January 15, 2024.
He was born in Palmerton, PA on September 19, 1949, to Lawrence D. Smale and Dorothea Gavoille Smale. Dennis graduated from Pleasant Valley High School before receiving his degree in surveying from Pennsylvania State University. Upon graduation from Penn State, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a Sea-Bee in Vietnam from 1969-1972.
After Vietnam, Dennis returned to his family farm in Jonas, PA, and married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Anna L. (Getz) Smale, on August 26, 1972, in Kresgeville, PA. He then worked as a surveyor, but by 1974 was farming his family farm full-time alongside his father.
He and Anna had three children, who meant the world to him, as well as one “foster son”, Norman Hollenbach. Dennis valued and treasured his family and was a loving example for his grandchildren.
Solid in his faith and belief in the Lord Jesus Christ, Dennis sought to help those around him. Always respectful of God’s creation, he truly loved the land he farmed and greatly enjoyed spending time in nature, hunting and hiking.
Dennis is preceded in death by his mother, father, and brother, David L. Smale.
In addition to his wife, Anna, he is survived by his son, Daniel L. Smale of Jonas, PA; his daughter, Amanda L. Giunta, and her husband, Mark A. Giunta of Kresgeville, PA; his son, Andrew D. Smale, and his wife, Ines Bott Smale of Waldbronn, Germany; and his grandchildren, Mira R. Giunta, Silas L. Giunta, and Levi Bott Smale.
Dennis will be greatly missed by many.
A viewing will be held on Monday, January 22, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at the Kresge Funeral Home, 1763 Route 209, Brodheadsville, PA 18322. Funeral services will follow at 11:30 AM with Rev. Michael Yaworski officiating. Burial will follow in Gilbert Cemetery.
