Irene G. Martucci, 100, formerly of Brodheadsville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday January 12th at St. Luke’s Hospital after complications from hip surgery.
She had lived in the West End for much of her life, settling in Brodheadsville in a house off of Route 209 where her husband Dr. John operated his medical practice. That house still stands to this day. After retirement, most of their time was split between winters in Tucson, Arizona and summers in Longport, New Jersey.
Born in Jessup, Pennsylvania on December 18th, 1920, Irene was the daughter of the late Raniero and Gemma Bucari Giombetti, a graduate of Jessup High School, and a proud alumnus of Marywood University (Class of 1942). She was a registered dietician, eventually meeting her husband at Philadelphia’s Hahnehmann Hospital and held memberships in both the American Association of University Women and the Women’s Auxiliary to the Monroe County Medical Society.
Irene’s life revolved around her family and she was happiest when cooking for everyone during weekends at the Jersey Shore and holidays in Brodheadsville. She had a big heart and loved to spoil her grand and great grandchildren who knew her as “Nonie”. Irene was a world traveler, a Sudoku enthusiast, an avid reader, and had a laugh that was contagious.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. John Martucci and sons John Jr. and Dr. William (Dr. Bill) Martucci as well as sisters Vera Rogers and Viola Ghigiarelli and brothers Nello and Leo Giombetti.
Irene is survived by her daughters-in-law: Virginia (Bill) Martucci of Brodheadsville and Martha (John Jr.) Martucci of Longport, New Jersey, grandsons John Christopher (Amy) Martucci of Nazareth, Nicholas (Liz) Martucci of Wilmington, North Carolina, and Matthew (Stephanie) Martucci of West Deptford, New Jersey, eight great grandchildren: Julian, Jenna, Joseph, Giovanni, Giada, MJ, Adria, and Vienna Martucci along with nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be scheduled on a later date at the convenience of the Priest and family in St. Roch's Cemetery, Pen Argyl.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Irene’s name to the Immaculate Conception School, 290 W Babbitt Ave., Pen Argyl, PA 18072 or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital online at http://www.stjude.org , by phone (800) 822-6344, and by mail via check or money order: ALSAC/St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
