Margaret Gleisberg of Stroudsburg died on Sunday, October 2, 2022, to be with her beloved husband, John. She was born on April 30, 1933, in Brooklyn, New York, to Hans and Irmgard Reiter.
Peggy, as she was known, attended Grover Cleveland High School and graduated in 1951 whereupon she enrolled in nurse's training at Kings County Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated as a student nurse and became a Registered Nurse shortly thereafter.
While still in her teens, she met the love of her life, John or "her Johnnie." They were married in August 1954 and moved to Sciota, Pennsylvania in 1956. Peggy was proud to say that she lived in Sciota most of her life.
Peggy worked as a nurse, first at Monroe County General Hospital, then at Laurel Manor and Pleasant Valley Manor nursing homes. After she retired from nursing, she worked at Musselman Jewelers in the Stroud Mall. She enjoyed that job very much, and she and her co-workers called themselves "the Gems." She also worked at Pocono Medical Center in Medical Records. After Peggy fully retired, she volunteered for many years at Pocono Medical Center as a runner and never took the elevator if she could help it.
Peggy was a nurse first and foremost. This fact was driven home to her children when they became rambunctious with the admonition, "We are NOT going to the ER today. I WILL stitch you up myself!" which was taken as a statement of fact by Debbie, Patti, and Brian.
Peggy was frugal. She knew where every cent of the household's budget was going or had gone and she had the receipts to prove it. Her passion was hanging laundry out in the sun and she loved ironing that laundry, as strange as that may seem. Despite her claims to the contrary, she was an excellent cook; her "clean out the refrigerator" soup was a specialty, and although it was never the same twice, it was always delicious. Her favorite flavor of ice cream was plain chocolate and her favorite color was purple.
Peggy is survived by three children: Debbie Calhoun, and her husband Jim, of Big Pool, Maryland; Patricia Milenkowic, and her husband Paul, of Cherry Valley; and Brian Gleisberg, and his partner Nikki January of Sciota. She had six grandchildren: Collin Calhoun of Big Timber, Montana; Will Calhoun and his wife, Dr. Sondra Lavigne, of Springfield, Pennsylvania; Ian Gleisberg of East Stroudsburg; Kirsten Milenkowic of Roxborough, Pennsylvania; Aaron Gleisberg of Stroudsburg; and Adam Milenkowic of Hancock, Michigan. She also leaves behind a great-grandson, Oliver Calhoun of Springfield, Pennsylvania. Peggy was preceded in death by her beloved John in May 2022; her sister, Christel Reiter; and her parents.
Burial will be private. The family will receive visitors at Kresge Funeral Home, 1763 Route 209, Brodheadsville, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, November 22, for an hour beginning at 4:00 p.m. Peggy always said she wanted her flowers while she was alive; so in lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks that you volunteer somewhere you feel will make a difference and maybe, on a sunny day, hang some laundry out on the line.
