Obituary for Russell James

Russell James, 83, of Effort, passed away Thursday, July 1 in St. Luke's Hospital - Monroe Campus.

He was the loving husband of 11 years to Barbara (Hubbs) James, and also the husband of 43 years to the late Carolyn James.

Born in Reynolds, IN, he was the son of the late Willie James and the late Margaret (Carpenter) James.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Effort.

Russell was a sewage treatment worker for the Department of Environmental Protection in Staten Island, NY, for twenty years. Prior to that, he worked in heavy construction for twenty years, also in Staten Island, NY. He was a US Navy Veteran, and a member of the American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert. He was a member of the Colonial Rod & Gun Club in Staten Island, and also the Blue Ridge Cherry Valley Rod & Gun Club. He was an avid NASCAR fan, and drove stock cars and jalopies at Weissglass Stadium in Staten Island for many years. He loved western magazines, hunting and fishing with his late son Rusty, Sudoku and word puzzles. Russell also loved traveling, as he drove eight cross country trips throughout his life. He was the greatest man you could ever know. Most of all, he was a loving and caring husband, father, stepfather, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather. He will be deeply missed by all of his friends and family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, William James of Staten Island, NY; two daughters, Jill Scanlon of Inverness, FL, Judie James of Staten Island, NY; four step daughters, Barbara Tryde of Staten Island, NY, Pamela Tryde of Wichita, KS, Jean Fetzer of Cresco, Norma Becker of Las Vegas, NV; a sister, Carol Smith of Fort Myers, FL; fifteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and his beloved great grand dog, Bane. Along with his late first wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Russell "Rusty" James.

Viewings will be held on Thursday, July 8, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Friday, July 9, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Kresge Funeral Home, 1763 Route 209, Brodheadsville. Funeral services will begin on Friday, July 9 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Manuel Stivers officiating.
