Obituary

The Customs Brokerage and Forwarding industry has lost an industry giant when on Monday September 28, 2020, Stewart B. Hauser of Sciota, PA died at the age of 78. He will be greatly missed for his keen wit, his insight into the industry, his willingness to share his knowledge and his ability to pose questions that made meetings run longer, called by many “the Hauser effect”. Stewart devoted his entire education and career to the facilitation of international trade and spent many years in the transportation industry as a customs house broker, foreign freight forwarder, teacher and consultant.
He attended Horrace Mann graduating in 1959. Stew entered the Customs Brokerage and Foreign Freight
Forwarding business upon graduation from Brown University in 1963. At that time he
joined his father and mother at D. Hauser Inc., a firm founded by his father in 1942.
While working, he obtained an MBA from New York University in Management and his
Customs Broker License and Insurance Broker License in the next five years. He took
over presidency of D. Hauser, Inc. in 1968 and in 1971 founded Hauser Air Corp. to
specialize in air freight shipments. He is now Chairman of D. Hauser Inc., as Hauser
Air Corp. was merged into it in 1991.

Through the years he had an active role on many committees within the NY/NJ Foreign Freight Forwarders & Brokers as well as the National Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association of America. He served as President of the NYNJFFFA for 13 years and continued as a chairman of the board, and a senior advisor He received the association first Captain of Industry award in 2016. Stewart served on various committees for the NCBFAA where he was a board member, the treasurer, and the association representative to CESAC. A first time registrant to the NCBFAA’s annual convention would receive a call from Stewart to welcome them and invite them to a reception now called the Stewart Hauser First Timers Reception. He also served for many years as Registrar of the Men’s Field Hockey Association of America from which he retired in 1980. He received an Auctioneer License in 1980. Stewart served as a representative to many different groups on behalf of the NY association and was completely committed to the future of the Customs Brokerage and Foreign Freight Forwarding industry in New York. He served as President on the board of the Lothar Klestadt Memorial Schholarship Fund. Stewart was also an adjunct professor at New York University and a professor at Northampton Community College in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
