Obituary for Esther P. Smith (Price)

Esther P. Smith (Price)
Esther P. Smith

Esther P. would like to let you know that her work here is done but her legacy lives on. She received an offer you can't refuse, for which she will not be returning...This assignment came with a huge sign-on-bonus - a grand reunion with family and friends not seen in a long time. Her new mission takes her to a wonderful place where she will be socializing, cooking, laughing and having a good time again - and this is a guarantee.

She left very detailed instructions for her family and friends to celebrate her mission here, which is now completed. Low adherence to these instructions will not be tolerated.

We will remember her smile, her warmth, her great energy and mostly her love for life and her family. She worked hard all her life, up until the very end. She made a difference in the lives of many.

Esther P. was married to the late Oakey H. Smith Sr. who passed away in April of 1995. They had two children, Oakey (Harry) Smith Jr. and Cindy Smith, both of Reeders; three grandchildren, which were her heart, Amy Antosh and her companion Brian Croop of Groton, NY, Jason Smith and wife Christine of Cresco and Michelle Wolcott and husband Lester of Reeders; three great grandchildren, Jessemyn Gager and fiance' Justin Peters of Cresco and Zachary and Kirsten Gager, both of Cresco; one great great grandson, Jayden Peters, whom she adored. She was the eldest child to the late Kenneth and Verlo (Hardenstein) Price and is also survived by two sisters, Hazel Bonser of Stroudsburg and Sandra Holton of Falls Church, VA and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Russell Price, husband of Grace Price.

Those who knew Esther P. know she was a modern woman ahead of the times. She married Oakey on Dec. 24 1945 while still in high school because he was drafted. Esther loved to work. She thought no better profession than being a waitress. She worked at the original Penn Stroud in Stroudsburg and at the Colonial Diner from 1971 until it was sold to make Hula Hoops. She and Oakey owned Smitty's Bar & Tavern in Tannersville. When sold, the liquor license went to Camelback. They also owned Smith's Red Barn Bar in Saylorsburg. Esther also enjoyed working in the Pocono Elementary School cafeteria.

Esther P. was especially grateful for Dr. Doug Degler, Dr. Sedani, Dr. Ponnathpur and Dr. Teddy Bear.

As per her detailed instructions, services will be private for family and close friends after her baby sister gets home from watching the reindeer, arctic fox and polar bears in Norway.

Memorial donations may be made to the Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Co., P.O. Box 215, Reeders, PA 18352.

The Kresge Funeral Home, 1763 Route 209 Brodheadsville, is in charge of arrangements.
